Annual Assessment Academy

Purpose

The purpose of the Howard University Annual Assessment Academy is to engage faculty in the assessment of academic assessment reports, general education artifacts, and to offer professional development opportunities related to assessment. The Third Annual Assessment Academy will welcome raters for the assessment of academic assessment reports and general education artifacts.

Assessment of Academic Assessment Reports

Throughout the academic year, all academic programs submit an academic report (plan and results) by May 31st. These reports include a mission statement, a set of learning outcomes, appropriate measures to track student learning, targets, results, and suggested improvements. Using a rubric, faculty will rate between 15 and 25 reports over a four-week period. Faculty will be trained by attending an informational meeting and participating in a calibration exercise. Trainings will be recorded and made available on this site.

Faculty who complete the assignments will receive a $100 Bank of America gift card, a certificate of participation, and the thanks of the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

Assessment of General Education Artifacts

General education outcomes like critical thinking and written communication are assessed both in coursework (in situ assessment) by instructors of record and through rating exercises (external assessment) by a cadre of trained faculty raters. External assessments often use outcome-specific rubrics that align to national best practices (AAC&U VALUE rubrics for example). Using a shared rubric, faculty will rate between 15 and 25 artifacts (student work) over a four-week period. Faculty will be trained by attending an informational meeting and participating in a calibration exercise.

Faculty who complete the assignments will receive a $100 Bank of America gift card, a certificate of participation, and the thanks of the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
