Data Analyst

Location: Howard University, Washington, D.C.

Role Overview:

The Data Analyst will support Institutional Research and reporting functions. The role involves gathering and verifying institutional data, developing complex database queries, and ensuring accurate and consistent reporting standards. The Data Analyst will handle federal, state, and higher education compliance reporting and assist departments with data collection and analysis. Additionally, the position includes collaborating with data stewards, supporting the annual MSCHE report, and providing data for grant applications and accreditation requirements.

The Data Analyst will design and prepare internal reports, including the University Fact Book, and maintain the Institutional Research website and portal pages. The role requires proficiency in data extraction and analysis using tools such as Hyperion, Tableau, and SQL browsers, as well as conducting research and generating visualizations with Excel and SPSS. The candidate will also support college committees and task forces, assist with operational needs of the Institutional Effectiveness office, and collaborate with the Director of Institutional Research on strategic projects.

Core Competencies:

  • Data Integration: Ability to compile and merge data from multiple sources and systems.
  • SQL Expertise: Experience extracting complex data sets from relational databases using SQL or SQL browsers.
  • Survey Preparation: Knowledge of preparing data for Common Data Set and external surveys (e.g., US News).
  • Internal Reporting: Skilled in managing queries and reporting data for internal requests.
  • Database Maintenance: Ability to maintain and update databases.
  • Microsoft Office Proficiency, particularly Excel.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills.
  • Effective presentation and customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail.

Director of Institutional Research

Location: Howard University, Washington, D.C.

Role Overview:

The Director of Institutional Research will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations and institutional research resources within IRA, which is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive program of institutional effectiveness supporting university-wide planning, assessment, research initiatives, data governance and accreditation. The Director will also work closely with stakeholders to generate reports in Workday, the new ERP system for the University, for both compliance reporting and internal reporting purposes. In addition, the Director collects, analyzes, and reports a wide variety of institutional data for use by key stakeholders, including the president and all campus divisions. This position requires a positive attitude, an ability to collaborate with others, a desire to improve and simplify processes, an eagerness to learn new software tools, including dashboard tools, and a hunger for accuracy and completeness

The Director of Institutional Research primarily oversees the University’s external reporting, internal reporting, and data analysis in support of institutional assessment, planning, and decision-making. Key responsibilities include ensuring data stewardship, conducting research and analysis, and data reporting and presentation.
