Inaugural Assessment Fellows Selected

The following individuals have been selected as the first class of Howard University Assessment Fellows. Applicants from across the university submitted ideas and plans for research related to assessment. The selected class will receive a $1500 award and be required to produce at least one deliverable related to their work to be posted on the IRA website.

The hope of the Assessment Fellows program is that it will ignite new assessment-related research agendas and support those faculty projects already under way.

Process

Fellowships will be awarded in June of each year, and fellowships will last for the following academic year. Fellowships will be awarded to current based on an application and committee decision.

Funds will be dispersed in a full stipend at the beginning of the fellowship year, and check-ups will occur with all Fellows in September, November, and February.

Assessment Research Fellows - Faculty/Staff ($1500)

Purpose

The Assessment Research Fellow Program is an initiative aimed at encouraging faculty to be thoughtful about assessment of student learning in their academic field or assessment practices at large.

Possible research topics include but are not limited to:

  • use of rubrics in grading and assessment
  • faculty time spent on assessment activities
  • students assessing students
  • faculty productivity assessment in your field
  • faculty opinion about assessment
  • assessment activities as service

Research is open to more traditional research (qualitative studies of faculty experience, quantitative studies on student passing rates on a national or course-specific assessment) and exploration (best practices in course level assessment, best practices in program level assessment).

Eligibility

Assessment Research Fellows are selected faculty members (tenured, tenure-track, or non-tenured track) who have a specific interest in researching topics related to student learning outcomes, assessment, accreditation, or the use of assessment data for continuous improvement.

Requirements

Research Fellows will be required to create at least one publishable white paper on the proposed subject by the end of the fellowship year. If the paper is being submitted for consideration by a peer-reviewed journal, a summary can be provided to post on the ira.howard.edu website. Additionally, Assessment Research Fellows will be required to complete at least one seminar, workshop, brownbag, or presentation to the Howard University community regarding their research. This presentation will be directly connected to the Spring Assessment Week to be held each March.

Evaluation

Each application will be evaluated using the Assessment Research Fellow selection rubric.
